CINEASIA HONORS XUE XIAOLU AS “EMERGING TALENT OF THE YEAR”
Chinese Director Wins Inaugural Award At The Region’s Premiere Movie Convention And Trade Show In Hong Kong
- 9Dec 2010
Singapore/Hong Kong – Upcoming filmmaker Xue Xiaolu, an award-winning Chinese screenwriter-turned-director, was the recipient of the inaugural “Emerging Talent of the Year” Award at CineAsia 2010 today.
The Award was presented at the gala night held at the Grand Hyatt Hotel as part of CineAsia, the only international convention dedicated to Asian cinema exhibition and distribution.
Presenting Xiaolu with the Award, Mike Ellis, President and Managing Director Asia Pacific, Motion Picture Association (MPA) said, “Xiaolu is a fine example of the upcoming Chinese screenwriters and directors who are taking center stage in the development of the country’s burgeoning film industry,”
“We at MPA are especially proud of Xiaolu and of having a special connection with her. We are happy to be here to celebrate her success,” he added.
Ms Xue won a scriptwriting competition supported by the MPA in 2006. Her directorial film debut “Ocean Heaven” was chosen as the opening movie for this year’s 13th Shanghai International Film Festival. The critically claimed movie, which she wrote as well as directed, stars Jet Li and tells the touching story of a devoted father who spends his entire life and fortune caring for his autistic son. The story originated from her personal experiences as a volunteer working with autistic children in China. Since 1994, Ms. Xue has volunteered her time to work with “Starry Rain,” a national network of parents with autistic children.
“I am very honoured to receive this award. I would like to thank CineAsia for the recognition and MPA for their support for young, upcoming filmmakers in the region. Such strong encouragement makes filmmaking an even greater joy. I would also like to say that it has been very satisfying to see that the movie has raised public awareness of autism,” said Ms. Xue. “Like my volunteer work, I hope that through a little effort we can work together to make a life-lasting difference for the children touched by this condition.”
“It is a great honor for CineAsia to salute Ms Xue as a unique artist whose broad range of talents deserve both acclaim and recognition,” said Robert Sunshine, CineAsia’s Managing Director. “We are pleased to recognize Ms Xue when she is expanding her creative work horizon to include directing and we look forward to seeing more of her work in the future.”
Ms Xue is currently an associate professor with the Film Literature Department of the Beijing Film Academy and also belongs to several prestigious artist associations including the Chinese Writers’ Association, Chinese Film Artists Association and Chinese TV Artists Association. Before her directing role, Ms Xue wrote a large number of film and television drama scripts, including nine films which have been theatrically released and more than 180 TV drama episodes, as well as numerous documentaries and novels. Many of her works have won international prizes and national awards.
Now in its sixteenth year, CineAsia was held at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre from December 7 – 9, 2010.
